TCAL ends

The Community At Large in its current iteration is now over. Thanks for visiting, but you won’t find any new posts here. Also, all comments forms are closed, except on this post.

TCAL ran from 1998 - 1999, and then disappeared until September 2004 when it returned in the form you see it in today. It now stops, with one last iteration to come in the next few years.

Thanks a million to all our thousands of daily readers, those who left comments on posts, anyone who took the time to email in links and stories for the site, and also to those who wrote feature articles.

Thanks to all the frequent posters: Adam, Dave, Davey, G, Norm, Piaras, Steph, adnans, dodger, gordy, jp, kgaughan, littleman, maca, squid, stephen xiel, Si, Feshti, PeterR, lorcan, rOb, sbradish, twenty and Tim.

My favourite link is still Quest for the Crown.

TCAL returns one more time. Until then.

PS3 problems with backward compatability

dodger @ 12:46 pm

Here ya go Europe. Another fuck you from Sony.

The European version of Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) console will not play as many old games as American and Japanese models, Sony has announced.Gamers who already own PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation (PS) games may find they will not work on the long-awaited, new console. The European PS3 has a different design to the Japanese and American consoles, which went on sale in November.

Reason

The console was supposed to be “backwards compatible”, meaning all older PS and PS2 games should work on the new console. But the European PS3 utilises a new combination of hardware and software emulation in which software takes over some of the functionality that was previously taken care of by dedicated chips. This means that while European gamers will be able to play a wide range of original PlayStation titles on the PS3, there will be a limited number of PS2 games that will be compatible with the new console.

Wimbledon pays equal prize money

jp @ 11:44 am
The Wimbledon Championships will hand women and men equal prize money for the first time at this year’s tournament.
The announcement by the All England Club on Wednesday brings it into line with other Grand Slams after criticism from officials and players.

Similar to the US and Australian Opens, equal rewards will be offered across the board, from the champions down to the first-round losers in all events.

Rest of the story at the beeb. Must fight the urge.. no women equality jokes..

Thanks Choda

In your endo

danger @ 9:07 pm

The sexual innuendo page at uncyclopedia is a work of giggling in the office inducing genius.

Sexual innuendo is a hard topic to stay on top of. As a humour tool, it stands erect in the English language. While there are no hard and fast rules as to what constitutes sexual innuendo, there have been many mass debates on the topic, and now the general principles at the root of the topic are firm and well-rounded. However, full penetration of the subject requires that the reader take a long, hard look at the target and be a cunning linguist in order to avoid limp phrases and imbibe the phrase with a large handfull of meanings

Mice pleased with dazzling smiles but ask how many mice must die for regrowable teeth - Scienticians also working on regrowing fingers in bid to work on enough to create longest TCAL post title ever

danger @ 11:04 am
Here’s something to smile about: a Japanese team has successfully grown replacement teeth and implanted them into the mouths of adult mice, suggesting that a similar technique could replace missing teeth in humans.

Takashi Tsuji at the Tokyo University of Science, Japan, and his colleagues took single-tooth mesenchymal and epithelial cells – the two cell types that develop into a tooth – from mouse embryos. They stimulated these cells to multiply before injecting them into a drop of collagen gel. Within days, the cells formed tooth buds – the early stage of normal tooth formation.

Yes. Regrowable fingers too: Those superheroes just won’t stop.

There’s the guy who sliced off a fingertip but grew it back, after he treated the wound with an extract of pig bladder. And the scientists who grow extra arms on salamanders. And the laboratory mice with the eerie ability to heal themselves.

This summer, scientists are planning to see whether the powdered pig extract can help injured soldiers regrow parts of their fingers. And a large federally funded project is trying to unlock the secrets of how some animals regrow body parts so well, with hopes of applying the the lessons to humans.

Michael Ritter, an associate press science writer can almost smell the Pulitzer with this paragraph:

The implications for regrowing fingers go beyond the cosmetic. People who are missing all or most of their fingers, as from an explosion or a fire, often can’t pick things up, brush their teeth or button a button. If they could grow even a small stub, it could make a huge difference in their lives.

I see. I thought people who wanted their fingers were back were just selfish. Full story.
