Wimbledon pays equal prize money

jp @ 11:44 am
The Wimbledon Championships will hand women and men equal prize money for the first time at this year’s tournament.
The announcement by the All England Club on Wednesday brings it into line with other Grand Slams after criticism from officials and players.

Similar to the US and Australian Opens, equal rewards will be offered across the board, from the champions down to the first-round losers in all events.

Rest of the story at the beeb. Must fight the urge.. no women equality jokes..

Thanks Choda

I didn’t expect to type that. Ever. But the always right on the button Limerick Blogger is reporting this:

The Limerick Leader is reporting that Limerick City Council are not ruling out the possibility of checking the feasibility of hosting the worlds largest games right here in Irelands Sporting City as part of their strategy to attract millions of visitors to the city in the next 10 years.

Sylvester Stallone came onto the pitch yesterday before the Everton Fulham match. Stallone is a friend of Everton shareholder Robert Earl and is in the UK to promote his latest film Rocky 6. You may remember a film called Escape to Victory. A footballing classic. Sly played the goalie in that gem. more here

The always on form Team Geared Up blog points us towards the newly redesigned Outsider Magazine Online. Not sure on the shout box though; as they just lend themselves towards this sort of nonsense:

Surfers snub rescuers for not taking boards

danger @ 10:47 am

Some hard core surfers got into trouble in pursuit of huge waves at the base of the Cliffs of Moher and subsequently refused to be rescued by a helicopter crew because the rescuers refused to take their surf boards.

The Irish Marine Search and Rescue Committee (IMSARC) called a meeting and took the unusual step of issuing a statement today about its deep concern at the incident.

It stated “in the strongest terms” that the behaviour of the surfers involved was “completely unacceptable” to the rescue agencies and to the maritime community.

BN story. That is just true raging against the dying of the light. Or: Stupid. I’m wondering if there’s more to this story? (via.)

Dublin Port Run

danger @ 10:57 am

On Sunday December 10th you can run along the Dublin Port tunnel before it opens. Only mad as biscuits bastards will be running in it once it opens obviously. You can register to run here, and apparently there’s a lorra (did you know Cilla Black (official site, wikipedia) posts here?) runners going for it, so get your skates on. Particularly if you want to cheat. Geared Up Blog, Ireland’s best outdoorsy blog has more.

The official bertie hole website (www.dublinporttunnel.ie) has info on it too. And a port tunnel aside: Have a look at the tolls. Squarely aimed at stopping cars and light vehicles using the tunnel, it costs a whopping €12 to get into bertie’s hole at peak times.

Tyson might fight women

danger @ 12:12 am

Straight from the it’ll-never-happen department.

But the 40-year-old former heavyweight champ promised an entertaining show Friday night when he launches the “Mike Tyson’s World Tour” in Youngstown.

At a news conference at an Italian restaurant, Tyson said he would likely go just four rounds and that future stops on the tour might include bouts with women, possibly professional boxer Ann Wolfe.

Wolfe, from Waco, Texas, is 21-1 with 15 knockouts.

Classy guy. Full story. (via.)
