PS3 problems with backward compatability

dodger @ 12:46 pm

Here ya go Europe. Another fuck you from Sony.

The European version of Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) console will not play as many old games as American and Japanese models, Sony has announced.Gamers who already own PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation (PS) games may find they will not work on the long-awaited, new console. The European PS3 has a different design to the Japanese and American consoles, which went on sale in November.

Reason

The console was supposed to be “backwards compatible”, meaning all older PS and PS2 games should work on the new console. But the European PS3 utilises a new combination of hardware and software emulation in which software takes over some of the functionality that was previously taken care of by dedicated chips. This means that while European gamers will be able to play a wide range of original PlayStation titles on the PS3, there will be a limited number of PS2 games that will be compatible with the new console.

danger @ 12:38 am
Despite it still being completely sold out in the US and UK, Wii sales are showing signs of slowing in Japan as players settle into Nintendo’s new generation…

I would say the short answer is no. Full article.

It’s like normal skiing; except the funky coloured stars you collect and constantly changing background make it more aggressive apparently. Or maybe it’s the guys trying to shoot you. Aggressive Alpine Skiing.

Guitar Hero coming to Wii

danger @ 9:59 am
The key difference in our strategy versus the prior cycle, is that in addition to full support on Sony and Microsoft platforms, we will aggressively target the Nintendo platforms consistent with our multi-platform strategy and Nintendo’s expected growth. In fiscal 2008, we will double our offerings on the DS and the Wii, including Spider-Man, Shrek, Transformers, and Guitar Hero.

Inevitable. Cool. Story.

PS3 to cost more in Ireland.

dodger @ 7:59 pm

A post on Sony’s Ireland website says the PS3 will launch there for 630 Euros. Thats €31 more than they said it would cost in Europe. It also says that the 20GB version of the machine will not be available in Ireland.

They have said the different price is a reflection of higher rates of taxation in Ireland than the rest of Europe, adding that previously announced European and UK prices are not affected.

Thats right Irish PS3 wannabee owners. Bend over and take it Here

Woman dies tryin to win a Wii

dodger @ 11:21 am

A mother of three died from water intoxication after a radio station drinking competition, a California coroner said on Saturday. Jennifer Strange, 28, competed in Sacramento station KDND 107.9’s “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest to try to win Nintendo’s console for her children.

Contestants were handed half-pint bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes for the first hour, and then larger bottles to up the ante.

No need to point out the tragic irony.

Another great idea from America… more at The Register
