Top 12 Movies in History That Were Ahead of Their Time
Good list of movies that were way ahead of their time when released. I’d have thrown Fight Club in there. At the end, he lists a few films released recently that he believes will be looked on as ahead of their time in years to come. And he says this after adding 300 to that list:
Yes, I’ve seen 300 and I’m already putting it here. Be ready to be blown away on March 9th.
Disney slams cease and decist on Galway students for Sister Act play
Members of the university’s GigSoc were in final rehearsals for a production “loosely adapted” from the Disney film Sister Act, which was to debut at the Black Box Theatre in Galway tomorrow after six months of preparatory work. But yesterday afternoon, in a letter sent via a Dublin-based solicitor, Disney informed the students that the performance would breach its intellectual property rights and threatened legal proceedings if the play went ahead, according to GigSoc.
He said the play had attracted “fantastic support” from students of NUIG and neighbouring colleges, while there had been “record interest” from the general public. “We are dumbfounded by Disney’s stance towards what is a charitable, non-profit-making society, aimed at promoting safety and integration for the student LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community. We were just having fun.”
That’s pathetic. Copyright & IP gone horribly wrong. Disney; quick get into court to lobby for another extension of copyright. Think of the unholy damage this production would have done to the marketing potential for Sister Act. Or what possibly could have been the logic behind it? What can possibly be gained from it? Do they think the publicity gained by this will make more people go rent Sister Act? Is Disney just pure evil?
Can you imagine if a recording of this play leaked onto the internet… Sales of the original Sister Act plunging, Whoopi Goldberg unemployed, Disney unable to make anymore hit Nun related movies… the humanity. Irish Times story. Gig Soc homepage.

Hot Fuzz trailer
I really like this trailer for Hot Fuzz.

I really don’t like the fact that now after posting a post with “hot” “fuzz” etc. and an image tagged as “Hot Fuzz trailer with swan” I’m now going to get people hitting the site looking for Swan Porn.
And of course I’m aware that typing Swan Porn will just make things worse. But sure fuck it, TCAL has always been a closet swan porn site, you just weren’t looking at it right. The film itself is out on the 16th February. IMDB for Hot Fuzz. Wikipedia for Swans.
Toy Story 3 coming 2009 and Shrek the third trailer
Super. I thought the second one was completely over-rated. But what do I know; and this is interesting:
Michael Arndt, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Little Miss Sunshine, is writing the script.
So there is hope then. Story.
In other cg animated movie events of the year news, the full Shrek the Third trailer is online. Another franchise where the second movie was way overrated. Let’s try an AOL movie trailer embed:

Ghostbusters 3
Dan Aykroyd just popped up on a country music radio station, declaring that in the last year, there’s been movement in the never-ending saga of the third Ghostbusters film. Aykroyd says his script — Hellbent: Ghostbusters Go To Hell — will now be brought to life as some kind of CGI-animated project, with Bill Murray’s blessing and even his involvement.
What? Full story at cinematical.

No Wonder Whedon…

One of the most straightforward material=director connections is disrupted once again by ‘movie moguls’ as Joss Whedon is not going to be directing Wonder Woman after all, found this out first from Superhero Hype and Mr. Whedon says:
SATIN TIGHTS NO LONGER. Joss will not be fighting for our rights after all.You (hopefully) heard it here first: I’m no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest… so tight! Okay, stay calm and I’ll explain as best I can. It’s pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.
Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.
The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I’m a free man.

Micro budget Glen Hansard film ‘Once’ scores at Sundance

The World Cinema Audience Award: Dramatic was given to ONCE/Ireland, directed by John Carney. ONCE is a modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard and his Irish band “The Frames,” the film tells the story of a busker and an immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story.
Official site of Once. (Where there’s a trailer.) An article gushing over the movie. The sundance film festival official website is cack. (Slow running Flash scripts nightmare.) Ridiculously high 9.2 rating on IMDB at the moment, but only from 14 votes.
Thanks Gareth.

Waxy’s 2007 Oscar pirate review
Each year waxy.org goes online and tries to find each Oscar nominated film online to see how the whole piracy thing is going:
I researched every nominated film, excluding the documentary and foreign film categories. Out of those 34 films:
* Academy members received screeners for 30 out of 34. (Everything except Click, Monster House, Poseidon, and Black Dahlia.)
* 31 out of 34 films were released online in some form, including camcorder footage. (Everything except Letters from Iwo Jima, Notes on a Scandal, and Venus.)
* 24 screeners were leaked online. (In several cases, they were leaked months before Academy screeners were mailed.)
* The average length of time between a film’s USA release and its first appearance online is 12 days.
* 9 screeners appeared online before they were mailed to Academy members.
* On average, a screener appears online 24 days before it’s received by Academy members. (Excluding these early leaks, the average time is 13 days.)
