No Béarla
Metafilter points us towards No Béarla; nice idea, TG4 broadcaster Manchán Magan attempts to travel around Ireland speaking nothing but Irish. There’s some clips up on YouTube, #1 #2 #3… here he is chatting up girls in Irish:
Loads of good comments on the metafilter post. There’s a page up about the series at manchan.com. And a big Guardian article here. Starts on TG4 on Sunday.

Yay, Lara Croft in Ireland!
Feshti's back and this time he's counting down the top 10 movie opening scenes of all time.
Is American opinion and culture crowding out all others?
[…] Is it possible to travel the length and breath of Ireland by only speaking in Irish? Evidentally yes if the following video clip is anything to go by. TG4 broadcaster Manchán Magan did it and this is his story. Here he buys condoms in a chemist, chats up some girls at a disco and finishes the night off by, well, watch the clip. It’s a bit funny. Didn’t catch it at the time, but this is quite similar in concept to fantastic short-film My name is Yu Ming.

To tell the truth, I do not recognise my own experience here. As far as I am concerned, people actually want to speak Irish with you if you are an obvious foreigner and show that you speak the language. In fact, even in places where I was not expecting anyone to speak it, I was accosted in it. And the majority of the taxi drivers that have given me a lift in Ireland have been able to speak the language. I remember when a friend and I were taking a taxi home in Dublin, we were speaking in Irish of course, and the driver actually started to speak it with us, and he was quite good at it.
Actually, it was kind of “neamhshaolta”, you know. It felt just like there being an entirely Irish-speaking Ireland there, under very little English for camouflage. Some day it will resurge.
