Saddam execution video goes live on the Internet
It was only a matter of time, but now Saddam Hussein’s execution has gone live on the Internet. It’s on Google Video, but I won’t link to it because I’ve got morals.
It’s strange that the world of YouTube and Google Video, what could once have been deemed the online equivalent of “You’ve been framed” minus Jeremy Beadle, has now become the home of snuff movies.
One wonders what it says about modern society that the most searched for video over the past 24 hours has been someone’s execution.

Yay, Lara Croft in Ireland!
Feshti's back and this time he's counting down the top 10 movie opening scenes of all time.
Is American opinion and culture crowding out all others?
I started to consider looking for this video on youtube after reading the article. Then something struck me, why.
What would I gain from viewing the taking of one life, does this learning make me better, does it add to my teachings, shall I become more aware of the duality of man, no.
There’s nothing to glean and seeing a man hang solves nothing but feeds the morbid and perverse state of boredom in our culture.

To watch someone die, even Saddam Hussein, cheapens us. It errodes our humanity.
The really horrible thing is that watching him on the news I actually felt sorry for him. I thought he was very brave in the end.
He might be a murderer on a massive scale but I don’t agree with killing him. It reduces us to his level.
He should have been left to rot in jail until this death. Killing is wrong, always.

Good post Piaras. You can read the BBC News 24 controller’s thoughts on the BBC editorial policy towards the images/video of the execution here

I ve seen a guy kill himself with a shot to the head which i reckon is far worse(maybe not)
But while not pleasent i cant agree with what you are saying, fascination with death is one of the most intrinsic human natures for obvious reasons.
I wonder what are your thoughts on the autopsy carried out on tv?

Is it any different than the crowds that once gathered for hangings in the UK? It’s not nice, but I don’t think it’s a contemporary phenomenon.

yes/no depends on one’s motive for watching. public humiliation is perhaps a pointless tool of learning. watching someone pass away can be beautiful, or brutal, depending once again on circumstances.
