Irish schools to block myspace, bebo and more from September

danger @ 1:51 pm

There’s a good discussion going on over at Tom Raftery’s web log about access to bebo & other resources in Irish schools. The post says:

Morning Ireland reported this morning that social networking sites MySpace and Bebo will be blocked from all Irish schools from September this year. The reason given for blocking the sites is that they are too time consuming. So far I can’t find any link to confirm this story.

I haven’t found any links either. Head on over to the post where we’ve been discussing the issue. Winds and Breezes has a follow up piece up on it as well.

Breakingnews.ie and every other news site:

The docking of Britain’s largest warship in Dublin is a shameful violation of Irish neutrality, the Dáil heard today.

The HMS Ocean drops anchor in the capital for a series of informal events including a reception for a British brewery looking to export to Ireland.

The military vessel was central to the assault on southern Iraq in the first three days of the 2003 invasion.

Pat Kenny on €900,000

danger @ 11:27 am

So we’re pretty much an entire day late with this story, that’s because I was rendered speechless and lost all the use of my brain for a good few hours when I heard that Pat Kenny gets €899,000 for his work, including his embarassing weekly performance on the Late Late Show. I mean, come on.

His total earnings of €899,000 in 2004 represent a pay increase of over 41%.

I have a few links to support my case. Listen to the mp3 at this link for starters. And then this one too. This article from Village magazine in April makes a good point:

Pat Kenny could be a good radio broadcaster. He has the voice, the fluency, the intelligence and the familiarity with his medium. All he needs is discipline, whether self-imposed or externally-imposed. Someone in his earphone frequently screaming “shut the feck up” or, ideally, a variant of same.

Luckily, we have podge & rodge to keep us sane; Bland Vs. Podge & Rodge says it all. The historical vandalised edits of the Pat Kenny entry on Wikipedia, like this one are always entertaining:

Nickname in college was “The Plank” because of his tendency to ‘get wood’ at inappropriate times. Is reported to have bedded over 40 show girls. Was once a trainee priest, but was forced to leave the seminary over allegations of sexual relations with a nun. Was once suspected of being “The Midnight Commando”, a Batman-style vigilante who fought night crime in late 1970s Dublin Once claimed to have travelled to space in “a giant hat”.

Fahrenheit 9/11 marine killed in action

stephen @ 1:01 am

Raymond Plouhar, the US Marine that appeared in the infamous recruiting scene in Michael Moore’s film, Fahrenheit 9/11, was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq this week.

Michael Moore apparently was unavailable for comment. The American news shows that you see on Sky News late at night are full of talk about this at the moment.
