Lordi: Eurovision 2006

danger @ 12:04 am

Lordi

When it comes to the Eurovision Song Contest, Finland is better known for its failures than for its successes. There is no doubt, however, that this year’s Finnish Eurovision entry will go down as one of the most engaging moments in the history of the competition. Win or lose––more probably win––the song Hard Rock Hallelujah and its performer Lordi will certainly be the one thing every viewer around the continent will remember from the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest Final, to be held on May 20 in Athens.

Stunned, our favourite art & culture blog hits gold with this one. How could it go so right for Finland and so wrong for Ireland when they let the public choose their entry? New York Times article about them. Lordi’s official site. Their Eurovision site. And here, is their entry. Hard Rock Hallelujah:

  2. Many Finns are really embarassed by this. Some see it as an utter act of pure desperation of a nation who just continually suck in the Eurovision.

    p.s. Lordi suck big time!

    Comment by ssid — April 28, 2006 @ 9:06 am

  3. Squid: Sorry about that I remember your post sitting in moderation. :( Top of the list are a bunch of upgrades to the site and then some tutorials on how to add videos and stuff. We all lose out when this happens, cause we could have seen this masterpiece weeks ago. :)

    Comment by danger — April 28, 2006 @ 10:34 am

  4. @ssid: Well, look at it this way: no matter how embarressing Lordi may be, they’re certainly a whole lot better than the usual crap that graces Europe’s screens on Eurovision night. I say, Lordi to win!

And on that topic, wouldn’t we all be better off if we could get own own native pantometal geniuses, the Warlords of Pez, up on stage instead of that twat Brian Kennedy.

    Comment by Keith — April 28, 2006 @ 4:34 pm

  5. Anyway, what’s not to like about a band that look like a bunch of desiccated klingons? :-)

    Comment by Keith — April 28, 2006 @ 4:39 pm

  6. Good lord. Warlords of Pez on Eurovision. Keith, you are a genius.

    Comment by danger — April 28, 2006 @ 4:41 pm

  7. Retarded lyrics and simple melodies.

    I’m sure they’ll do well…..

    Comment by Anima — April 29, 2006 @ 3:22 am

  8. Retarded is a definite improvement over braindead.

    Comment by Keith — April 29, 2006 @ 1:48 pm

  9. They are the best thing the Eurovision contest has ever seen, but unfortunately are nothing origional….thery’re ripping off GWAR, an underground metal band from days of yore.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK98k591DEQ&search=gwar

    Comment by norm — April 29, 2006 @ 4:04 pm

  10. Gwar looks kinda cheap compared with lord. I think Lord’s inspiration comes more from the Kiss instead some weird band noone’s heard about.

but I think it should win!!Stick it on repeat :D and Go Finland!

  17. Lordi will perform ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’ in the next round of the Eurovision Grand Prix, so prepare to dial in your votes. The official single will be released on 19.05. And then, on 20.05 the final decision will come down in Athens. A grandiose pyro show is guaranteed, and for your viewing pleasure click on the link for a short but amusing film from Finland

  18. They’re absolutely fantastic.
Finland doesn’t need to be ashamed, because there are many songs musically horrible, does it matter that Lordi is horrible in appearance?
And i don’t think they are horrible, though. They are cool and, you’ll be surprised but, cute especially when Mr. Lordi wears that hat:D
I know many people will vote for them in Turkey, so i guess they’ll get more than 10 points from my country. They can and should win, but if they don’t i want Bosnia Herzegovina to win.

  22. OH! YESSS…First time ever for us Finns! Lordi rocks my sox…
I think this is a one-time thing for Finland, we’re never gonna win the contest ever again, so this year I will enjoy it as much as I can!! Damn, the finnish television boss-thing said that if we win, he’ll have to start searching for sponsors - Finland doesn’t have enough money to do this kind of big “concerts”….my god, do we have a big enough stage even? Oh Dear… well I must say I’m proud to Finnish ;)
p.s the finnflag hat is gorgeous, but I also loved the lapland/saami hat!!!

    Comment by Pinja — May 20, 2006 @ 11:20 pm

  23. Now THATS! the best Eurovision song i have listened to in AGES! a very nice job well done! i love finland NOW!

    Comment by Ignat zuk — May 20, 2006 @ 11:59 pm

  24. Eurovision for me was always a display of crap music, the worst of what the countries have to offer, herrrr did i said “crap”, maybe an urinol that wasn’t washed in centuries is the best way to depict it.
Well i am ashamed of a band like Lordi played in that shitty contest, if it is fame that they wanted there are many ways but going to a stagnant contest like that…

    Comment by dev — May 21, 2006 @ 1:09 am

  25. FINLAND WON?! WTF??!!

    Comment by euROCK — May 21, 2006 @ 2:29 am

  26. THE BEST ONES WON, NO DOUBT!!! :D go FINLAND, go LORDI!! and to answer to what dev wrote, i think Eurovision was a very GREAT place for a heavy/hard rock band to compete in :) i think that contest was sort of stuck, not renovating itself–Lordi just spiced things up a bit, as Lithuania, Latvia and Iceland did also! I think younger viewes will start watching the contest now instead of just grannies :) EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2007 IN FINLAND!! see you all there!!

    Comment by Monster — May 21, 2006 @ 2:34 am

  27. @Pinja: If Ireland could pull off so many of them when we were in the shitter, I’m sure Finland will do a great job of it.

    Yay for Finland!

Now I’ll say something in Finland’s language:

  31. It’s so great that Finland won! I can’t believe this.

“Hard Rock Hallelujah” is a good song, but it’s not the best song of Lordi. I prefer “Would you love a monsterman?” ;)

    Comment by Neiti — May 21, 2006 @ 10:08 am

  32. Congratulations to Finland and Lordi - the “Monsters of the Baltic!”

I was suprised sister country Estonia didn’t give Lordi the full 12 points

  35. Well done Suomi :D
(besides, I have to tell - Finland is my dream country. That wonderful nature.. mmm)
    Yes. Finland rock.

The bigest greeting from Lithuania. :*

    Comment by Krista (Lithuania) — May 21, 2006 @ 3:15 pm

  36. Yippee we won!!! Mission impossible completed! ;)

Actually, before the contest, most people I talked to over here thought that if nothing else, our affable participant proves that Finns do have a sense of humour after all ;)

Most of the rest thought that it’ll just be a perfect protest against a useless contest that lost its original purpose long ago when all national character got omitted from the entries. Now they are suddenly all proud of the victory :P

You can believe there was a huge party in downtown Helsinki last night, head still hurts…

And Krista, funny, I happen to like Lithuania a lot, especially the beautiful Vilnius and the amazing beaches near Klaipeda. Greetings back to you, and welcome to Finland in 2007!

    Comment by Tuomas (Finland) — May 21, 2006 @ 6:08 pm

  37. aleluia guys you are great… I voted for you… Hard rock forever!!!!!!!

    Comment by radu — May 21, 2006 @ 7:49 pm

  38. Finland is a country of rock music. Great that we won by representing something we know the best. Most people supported Lordi’s participation from the beginning, so don’t believe all what’s said in newspapers… As what comes for money, hey come on, Finland is a way richer country than Turkey, Estonia, Latvija or even Greece so I bet we can make a good show for all of you! And btw Estonia isn’t our sister country any more than Sweden and USA or any other country which has similar languages are.

    Comment by nancy — May 21, 2006 @ 9:07 pm

  39. I’m happy that Lordi won. Im from Russia and I voted for Lordi. Exactly, I voted for hard rock in the appearance of Lordi. Finnish people have a big sence of humor to send Lordi on Eurovision. My congratulations to Finland!
    Rock’n'Roll will live forever!

  40. Eurovision…best laugh i had in a LONG time…AWESOME!!! but yeah…those finland monster dudes went off…good on em’!

    Comment by Aussiecrayon — May 22, 2006 @ 1:13 pm

  41. Why the hell would you be embarrased to have a band like Lordi performing for your country? Its all the other countries who should be embarrased for spewing out the same generic pop-crap each and every year. Finland rules! (I’m Swedish btw, and god damn ashamed of our “contribution”)
Hopefully there’ll be some more interesting acts next year making this whole shitty contest somewhat watchable.

  47. I haven’t really bothered to watch the eurovision song contest before because it’s usually quite boring. Each song being very similar to the one before and each female “artist” trying to show more and more skin. This time our entry was so controversial that I had no choice but to watch.

I really hope that this will teach everybody a lesson and we will see even more original entries in next years competition.

As the commentator on BBC Prime said, it was an amazing night :)

say…The first ofcource i have to say is congtratulations to the great finnish music band!!!
Well i ‘ll keep on.It’s the first time that a band didn’t use
the well known methods(half naked women, lot’s of dance etc) to win the contest. The song was really great, powerfull,
melodic and the lyrics if someone can analyse have really
deep meaning. For this contest that victory was a lightning coming from the finnish music band!!It is totally right Mr Lordi all we need is lightning with power and might…!
    Congratulations heroes!!!!

    Comment by Jim — May 22, 2006 @ 8:48 pm

  50. Hey guys- Bosnia n Herzegovina was definitely the best!!!! Lordi sux, their song is horrible, how can they consider it hard rock? Remember Norway last year? It was awesome in comparison to these.. Creatures!

    Comment by dren — June 3, 2006 @ 9:13 pm

  56. The only reason why many Finns are embarassed about Lordi is the facts that a large majority of Finns have strong religious beliefs and feel that Heavy metal rock band ‘Lordi’ with its so-called demon get up and ‘evil’ lyrics are against everything that they stand for. To be honest the song was chosen by the Finnish public and had the largest majority of votes ever (I think it got 47% of the votes compared to the second at 6%) although it was the younger generation voting them in. The country has a young ‘texting’ generation and was bound to win. Finnish music can be catergorised into three types: Choir music, Tango/Polka music and Heavy rock. Every kid here grows up listening to ACDC, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Him and so on. Therefore it is a true representation on what Finland should be entering into the Eurovision, plus the sheer brilliance of it deserved to win the Eurovision contest.
And to all you Eurovision ‘Euro-camp pop/techno’ lovers, the contest is a joke and has no true song that would do well in any of the worlds chart, so why take the song to heart and just enjoy the sheer naffness about it. If you don’t believe me, how come the Lithuanian entry get so many votes considering it was was just a mickey-take as to why they didn’t get any vote from thre previous year!
