The BEBO craze
The Sunday Times today has an article on the popularity of Bebo in Ireland:
RECRUITING 6,000 new Irish users a day, the latest internet craze to engulf Irish schools and campuses has become a victim of its own success. IT managers in colleges are blocking access to Bebo.com, the social networking website that claims more than 500,000 Irish users, because of the site’s unprecedented popularity.
That’s incredible. Everyone I know has heard of Bebo, even the most non-nerdy computer illiterate types. Now, how do we get TCAL to be that popular? Start posting pictures of everyone in Ireland when they are drunk? Ok then. John Breslin, a researcher at NUI Galway (And sponsor of the Best Group Blog at the Irish Blog Awards) was interviewed as part of the piece.

Yeah, everybody in school has one, and not only uses it at home, but talks about it elsewhere. It’s crazy. And after you get past the initial novelty, there’s not much there, but you keep going back.

Bebo getting blocked was the best move NUIG could make! I waited for an HOUR and a half once, since some bimbo was on one of the 2 scanner computers in the entire campus doing Bebo quizzes and other Bebo things. I wanted to rip the plug out of the wall.

my personal opinion is that even though bebo is an ideal website for perverts and uploading pornographic images when used for its intended use, for keeping in touch with friends and having a bit of fun, it is perfectly harmless, it is only when pupils of these school start posting information about themselves that could lead to legal action and/or child perversion (such as details of underage drinking, naked/ semi-naked images of children) come into place that bebo becomes a much more “dark” place, generally most bebo sites are fine and it is also possible to make your hompage private, meaning that it can only be viewed by direct friends, basically if children only posted small details about themselves on bebo and did not us their last names it would be less frowned upon, it is only when illegal activites are found to be taking place that government action is taken, so my message to beboers out there is to clean up your act before they get rid of bebo in Northern Ireland.

And those of u that said n e one can c ur page, that’s only if u make it public. There are lot’s of ways to get on bebo if it’s blocked at school and you cannot login use one of those zillion free proxy services like bikiniproxy.com .Jus google and you’ll get there most of the time they got filters for words like proxy but it’s an endless race.
But i’d rather stick to myspace for now instead of using bebo.

Speaking as a former user of Bebo, I think I have every right to say it is complete and utter gobshite.
The basis behind Bebo has gone to kids just wanting to build their pathetic little egos and convince themsleves that they are better than everybody else.
I merely saw bebo as a cutesy little site to share photos with freinds and such when it opned up in 2005-however, when Bebo began to grow later in the year, it scared the pants of me.
The entire world can access you and your personal details via Bebo, and kids don’t stop it-they love it!

There are two types of protections schools put in place,
One is that the website requested is simply blocked
The other is that the server on the network is scanning each invividual page for the word “Bebo” or other keywords.
The first can be easily bypassed using a proxy to manipulate the name of the web address

Bebo is neither good or bad! people can fall for a trick and meet somebody who isnt who they thought they were or even the age they thought but people can also get COMMON sence! if you are on bebo then DONT ask to meet somebody who you arent 100% is safe and dont give out private details! Ha Ha, it’s not shut down, there’s a notice up saying it will be back in a few hours, For all those against bebo, I believe it can be dangerous and maybe the age limit should be 16 instead of thirteen, though how to regulate it? Im sure there are kids on it younger than thirteen, but then again that will happen with all of these sites not just bebo. I find it a great way to keep in touch, Im travelling at the moment and it’s great to be able to put up the pics and show friends back home, also a good way to keep in touch with all the new friends Ive made on my travels

Bebo can cause bullying, take it from me, people left abusive comments on mine and even created a profile under my name and sent nast stuff to everyone i knew, everyone then turned against me. Also a girl at my school committed suicide due to the bullying on bebo, luckily she lived, but get this, the bullies then posted a picture of her by a grave side with a knife to her head saying ‘i love suicide’, so should bebo be banned? My BEBO Story………
At first i kept getting annoyed with emails from my friends…Please join Bebo! Bebo is great! and it was pissing me off, eventually after 8months of suffering i joined…and i admit I loved it! All my friends were on it, all my old ones i hadent spoken to in AGES! I’ve caught up with a lot of people! I started getting into building up my page and was really happy with it! but after awhile i constantly found myself fighting with my boyfriend over it because some random guy left me a comment and i had the manners to reply back! I’ve made good friends from that and they are all well aware i have a boyfriend! Then i started getting the sleazy comments from random sex ninfo perverts!
I was also horrified to find that women and man post naked or half naked pictures of them self online for people to view….And i was sickened when i found little boys and girls copying! just to get there views up (or confidence)
I also started finding rating sites where people make up a profile and have a beauty contest on there page, getting people to send in there pictures trying to be as sexy as they can…..It was a sex-perv and pedophiles dream!!
BEBO would be alot safer if they done alot more checks on profiles and you find alot of fakes on bebo as well!!
After this Craze and finding myself having both sides of the argument I would say BEBO is the most annoying pain in the ass site ever made!!! It is a good site but people have spoilt it and made it unsafe and BEBO isn’t doing anything to protect it’s members!
I also agree with the people who say it’s spoiling spelling and grammar! I am dyslexic and i refuse to do that! I feel i have to spell correctly and i am please with myself when i manage!!
Anyway I’ve written WAY to much here but my advice is if your wanting people to cut down on BEBO they should start charging and I’m sure in a few years time the will! When i was younger i use to be a member of FACEPARTY! it was the same idea but privet messaging! it was the bees-knees at the time and the smacked there site with a charge and they are very safe by checking every picture you upload!
They offer a free option and you get limited messaging credit witch would be IDEAL for BEBO then people would cut down!!!!

i dont have bebo, never really taken a likin to it. im not gonna come on here and knock bebo and say its a pile of crap but i just dont understand what the hell is the big deal with it. all my mates at college sit down in the library, sign onto bebo and then all they do is just sit clickin on people’s profile’s and lookin at their pics and leavin comments….nuthin about it really makes me want to get it. i wouldnt call it amazing or addictive.someone even mentioned that ‘bebo is my life’? hmm bit of a sad life to lead man. bebo has become the ‘cool’ thing to be on which makes it a trend. trends suck. one of my mates only got bebo so he can fit in with ‘the crowd’….

What a site it is ,it is the biggest site open to peeeeeeeedos,all them pictures on there of all them kids showing all there details,who else is watching your children i say good to the schools blocking this site but the parents should be aware of this site to and shut it down kids dont realise the dangers and parents say it never happens to my kids but god forbid it dont happen to your kids and help keep them safe SHUT THE SITE DOWN NOW. this is from someone who has the site in England to who cares for there kids.

I am tired of Bebo! The adults are sometimes intelligent, but by in large the people on ther are jerks and monsters and attack you if you say anything that they find evn slightly weird… no matter how hillarious it actual is or how funny it was intended to be. Crack cocaine is an epidemic, but Bebo is worse. The brain seems to shut down when becoming a Beboer! There should be science experiments done on the minds of Bebo account users. As a bebo user i ave to say i dnt understand the craze but u do always go bac to it i’ve been using it on my wrks comp and have just got in to wrk and they’ve blcked it and yeah i gutted its a way to comunicate wit me m8s and i’ve even found m8s on there i ent seen for yrs.

Bebo is a fun filled website that allows people all ages talk and keep in contact with people all around the world, also a chance to make new friends, obviously with EVERY other website it has its downsides but as a whole I think bebo is a good site and I shall not be boycotting it.
