Todays Dublin Riots

Dublin Riots
Image taken from indymedia.
The dublin riots flickr pool which has 93 photos in it at the moment. Great stuff from The Dublin Metroblog and others on getting them up there as well as reportage on events. Indymedia also has reports and a photo essay. Dec’s Rambling also put up some photos he took, they’re at flickr.

RTE has realaudio clips up from it’s special extended edition of 6one. The links are at the bottom of this article.

Piaras Kelly has opinions on the riots from a PR perspective. And DublinKa is moved to quote Yeats on the whole thing. There’s of course giant boards threads in politics and after hours already. Slugger has loads of posts and comments. And low brow culture sums it all up for everyone with a very simple post title: Fuck.

Update: Also see: Dublin Riots video footage again for more links.

  2. […] Glad I didn’t pop along for a gawk amn’t I? But if one good thing comes from this, hopefully it’ll help persuade people that Sinn Féin and their supporters aren’t really interested in peace and democracy. The Community at Large has a collection of links in this post […]

  3. Yes it was a pity the people of Dublin couldnt come out with their little union jacks and wave the loyalists on with pride, maybe this would lead the Catholics in the North to do they same.

  7. Lets all go up North to Belfast and try to march down the Falls road. I wonder what would happen.
Bertie Aherne et al seem “really suprised”. What planet do they hail from.

  9. There was a lack of Garda control from the agreed Orange Order march down O’Connell Street. Are people that naive to think the peace process is that successful that the Orange Order marching down O’Connell St will be met with smiles and sympathy? The Gardai and those that agreed this was a good idea need to extract their heads from the cosy place they are obviously lodged and offer more protection to the citizens of Dublin who beleive they are in control!!!

  10. The question is why was the march was let go ahead, even though the riots where wrong and we just done what the loyalists wanted. Now the loyalists have another way of claiming they are the victums in all of this, and wont admit that they where just as involed as republicans where in the troubles. The orange men who where marching are connected to the UVF. Whould the british goverment allow the IRA march through the streets of their capital??

    Comment by Aidan Connolly — March 11, 2006 @ 4:56 pm

  11. Allowing the Orangemen to march through Dublin is like letting the Klu Klux Klan march through New Orleans. No, it’s much worse. The Orange Order by its very doctrine are “Anti-Catholic, Anti-Irish” bigots. Aren’t we forgetting that these people traditionally burn effigies of the Pope and the Irish National flag every year? Does anyone actually believe that had they been allowed to march through Dublin that they wouldn’t have stopped outside that GPO to spit and bang their drums louder, just as they did once they reached Leinster House.

Allowing them to come to Dublin in the first place is counter productive to the peace process, as it further alienates and isolates Republicans, causing deep anger and frustrations to explode into violence because they increasingly feel betrayed. The Irish state only encourages young men and women to join dissident Republican groups because they feel completely betrayed yet again. The Irish state should take note. Young men and women in pubs throughout N. Ireland can now even be heard uttering the words, “Another Civil War is needed!”

  12. AS AN IRISH EX-PATRIATE LIVING IN LONDON, I CAN REMEMBER A REPUBLICAN MARCH IN HOLLOWAY ROAD. JUST AS IN DUBLIN, THERE WERE SOME LOW-LIFE POLITICAL ACTIVISTS WHO THOUGHT THAT THIS WARRANTED SOME OLD- FASHIONED THUGGERY. AS A,SUPPOSEDLY, TOLERANT, EDUCATED PEOPLE, DO WE GIVE A SHIT ABOUT SOME GUYS IN FUNNY HATS, WHO WANT TO BANG DRUMS? BANG SOME PRETTY WOMEN INSTEAD AND LEARN A LITTLE ABOUT LOVE.
