Schools closing in Georgia

tim @ 1:59 pm

This is just fucking sickening. They’re closing schools in Atlanta, Georgia to save on fuel. The decision has been praised by George Bush. Can you imagine that happening in Ireland? There’d be riots.

Article at the Guardian Unlimited.

Its mentioned on onegoodmove: End Times at onegoodmove.org.

As John Stewart puts it “Every child left behind”…

‘Us’ - a snapshot of Ireland

Steph @ 11:30 am

Tomorrow, the 1st of October, the Ray D’arcy show on Today FM are undertaking a project to ‘take a snapshot’ of life in Ireland. They want everyone to take a photograph tomorrow, of absolutely anything you like, and send it in by email to us@todayfm.com They hope to produce a book of the best by Christmas, all proceeds will go to charity.

It has been done before but only by a team of professional photographers. Almost everyone has access to a camera what with camera phones being rife at the moment, so the results should be very interesting indeed. So, snap to it! (apologies in advance for that…) Find out more here.

On Intelligent Design

danger @ 10:25 am

Good article on MSNBC; Why scientists dismiss “intelligent design.”

They see intelligent design (often called ID) as a revolutionary new science and themselves as revolutionaries. They envision toppling Darwinian evolution – once a revolutionary idea itself – and erecting in its place a theory about life that allows for supernatural explanations, a theory that makes God, or some entity very much like him, not just possible but necessary.

Quality Friday reading before destroying your brain this evening.

Van Morrison’s Contractual Obligation Album

danger @ 10:11 am
In order to fulfill his obligation to his early solo label Bang Records,Van Morrison sat down in 1967 or so and cranked out 31 songs on the spot, on topics ranging from ringworm to wanting a danish, to hating his record label and a guy named George. Make sure you get past the first few tunes - it takes him a few to get cooking.

And they’re all on mp3 at this link. (via.)

Jessica Alba admits to being digitally enhanced

danger @ 9:01 am

Yep. Think Jessica Alba looks well in those movie posters? Well they’ve been digitally enhancing her jiggly bits.

They enhanced my chest a little bit. They always do it. And in the poster for ‘Fantastic Four’ - they did it big time!”

NSFW-ish IDontlikeyouinthatway.com link. It’s just part of the ongoing saga we’ve been cataloging.

eDonkey follows WinMx to the grave

danger @ 12:10 am
eDonkey has become the latest victim of the recording industry’s wrath following the Supreme Court’s ruling against Grokster. In testimony at a U.S. Senate Judiciary Hearing on the future of P2P Wednesday, MetaMachine president Sam Yagan said his company was throwing in the towel.

Irish Film and Television Awards

danger @ 10:48 am

Nominees for the Irish Film and Television awards are up at the site. I never touched pure mule, I heard it was dire. But it seems all you have to do to get nominated is make a drama that gets put on RTE.

Guy builds himself real wolverine claws

danger @ 8:45 am

real wolverine claws
Of course I’m lying, because these aren’t stored under his skin when sheathed. Still, it looks highly dangerous, and we should applaud this sort of thing. Shnikt.

UK Broadband

danger @ 12:16 am

Just while you are enjoying your 2meg line, check out this blog post from Tom Raftery, pointing out that in the UK you can get a 24meg down 1.3meg up broadband connection from BT for roughly €40 a month. I’m going green, particularly at the upload speed. Irish providers seem to think of uploading as some sort of afterthought barely worth the trouble and seem determined to force the users-as-one-way-consumer model on us. Tom Raftery’s I.T.
