Pre-paid disposable credit cards available September

danger @ 12:28 pm
Permanent-TSB is offering a new pre-paid credit card that operates in a similar way to mobile-phone top-ups.

Permanent-TSB says the product, which is a joint venture with Visa, is the world’s first “disposable” credit card.

Consumers will be able to purchase the pre-paid cards in ordinary shops.

Good idea. Here’s the news story about it. Here’s the official site.

Update: They’re available already in selected retailers. Check the site for a list.

  5. Could a catch be that they’ll make a killing on all the small amounts you have left over that you couldn’t be bothered refunding? I sure won’t be reading all their T&Cs but it seems possible they could be doing a Dublin bus ticket job on it.

  6. well in yesterdays Indo, they said that you’ll have to pay a charge of about 5euro everytime you buy a card, + when you buy a 200 card lets say, and you spend 175, you cannot carry over the 15 to your next one and it will cost you money to get it refunded. So you’d wanna get the exact amount you need. and its 205euro to get a 200 card from what I can gather. Obviously they’re gonna make money. Why else would they do it. They say 5 ain’t bad when its 40 p.a. charges a year on a cc.

  8. i think they should go one better and intoduce a physical card. prepaid of course but a prepaid card that you can actually hold in your hand. the usa does them. i have one with an american bank but one with an irish bank would be so much handier. they look like an ordinary credit card, they just don’t have the credit limit. very handy and i am proud to use it.

  9. it is a physical card. You get the card, go into a shop, get a topup, but instead of them giving you a sheet of paper, they swipe your card through a machine. You’re then texted some extra details (expiry date basically).
The one problem is that each topup expires after a month, but as far as I know you don’t have to use 1 topup in 1 go, so you could use that extra 15 quid on another transaction.

They’ll make their money from the €5 charge and from the odd euro that people will not use before it expires. Still have to actually USE mine, I went to Mace the other day and they still hadn’t recieved the machines.

  10. A surcharge of ‘5 Euro’ every time you buy a disposable credit card? What a joke and what a rip-off! Why has there to be a surcharge for nearly everthing now you buy in “Rip of Ireland”..?
