Pre-paid disposable credit cards available September

danger @ 12:28 pm
Permanent-TSB is offering a new pre-paid credit card that operates in a similar way to mobile-phone top-ups.

Permanent-TSB says the product, which is a joint venture with Visa, is the world’s first “disposable” credit card.

Consumers will be able to purchase the pre-paid cards in ordinary shops.

Good idea. Here’s the news story about it. Here’s the official site.

Update: They’re available already in selected retailers. Check the site for a list.

Spielberg annoys Budapestians

gordy @ 11:07 am

or whatever the proper term is…. Anyway, while filming Munich Spielberg apparently hasn’t been too nice to local residents. Thats really all you need to know

A source says, “The best part is (Spielberg’s people) keep saying, ‘This is the biggest thing ever to happen to Budapest,’ which is true if you discount the whole Roman and Ottoman Empires, World Wars I and II, the fall of communism and the European Union’s accession.”

Harder than diamonds

gordy @ 10:57 am

shove some nanorods together and you get a substance harder than diamonds!.So say New Scientist
If you think you are harder than diamonds, its probably due to your tiny nanorod

Makosi facing deportation

dodger @ 10:43 am

You may have heard about this, Big Brother Loser Makosi is facing deportation for breaking the terms of her working Visa. This is hilarious.

The issue came to light after police stopped her for not wearing a seatbelt as a passenger in a car.

“The legal position is that Makosi’s working visa has now been curtailed, which means she has to either leave the country or appeal.”

Get her out

Candy

danger @ 4:00 pm

candy
Candy is a pdf only Irish magazine covering culture and design. It’s really pretty. But why PDF? PDF is an annoying format to browse through, if they’re going the computer way, why not do it as a proper web site? An 11 meg pdf is a terrible way to distribute anything Irish at the moment. Still, it has interesting and gorgeous content. Its linked in some way to the backlash night at Wax, which is run by Bodytonic music. You can download the two issues of Candy (which is all there is so far) here. It’s worth it.

A War to be Proud of

danger @ 2:27 pm

It’s becoming a huge problem on the internet: We all visit the sites we agree with. It’s nice and easy to read through a long article on how awful the Iraq war is and what a monster the US has become, because it supports beliefs I already hold. - Which is probably why I shouldn’t be reading it. I should be reading more stuff like this: A War to be Proud Of. It’s written by Christopher Hitchens.

LET ME BEGIN WITH A simple sentence that, even as I write it, appears less than Swiftian in the modesty of its proposal: “Prison conditions at Abu Ghraib have improved markedly and dramatically since the arrival of Coalition troops in Baghdad.”

The web is the perfect creator of a lovely comfort zone. Step outside it or become a moron. Also: Link to the daily show with Stewart talking to Hitchens.

CNN Weatherman Hissy Fit

tim @ 1:44 pm

A CNN weatherman has a hissy fit.

To be fair, your wan was being a bit annoying by interrupting.

NYT on iPod phone

danger @ 12:34 pm
Apple Computer and Motorola plan to unveil a long-awaited mobile phone and music player next week that will incorporate Apple’s iTunes software, a telecommunications industry analyst who has been briefed on the announcement said on Monday.

The NYT picks up on the widely speculated about Apple phone which will incorporate iTunes capabilities. I’ve been waiting for an offordable mobile/mp3 combo for years. It should also allow all its space to be used as bog standard memory key. Click.

Spaghetti Monster reaches main stream media

danger @ 9:39 am

Oh joy of joys. The spaghetti monster has reached the New York Times.

Is the super-intelligent, super-popular god known as the Flying Spaghetti Monster any match for the prophets of intelligent design?

It’s a good read if you are not up on the whole issue. Previous posts. (via.)

RIAA vs. Patricia Santangelo

danger @ 9:35 am

Lovely snippet from the court case we reported on before - the RIAA is sueing Patricia Santangelo for illegal file sharing, but she claims she didn’t do it. Have a look at what the judge says when the typical music industry lawyer gets up and starts throwing it around. (via.)

De Niro’s wife targeted by maid

dodger @ 4:00 pm

This is a rubbish story about a maid steeling from Mrs De Niro or Grace Hightower, the only reason i’m posting about this is for the classic quote below.

“I only stole from people who didn’t treat me with respect,” said Ms Turyk, who denies charges of theft

Warner To Start Releasing Smaller Albums

tim @ 1:08 pm

WARNER Music Group (WMG) is to begin releasing music by artists in “clusters” of three or four tracks rather than as whole albums, heralding the first big shift away from the record industry’s traditional business model.

Sounds like an opportunity for them to charge more for less.

MTV Music Awards

danger @ 12:31 pm
Green Day were the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami last night.

The band won the awards for Video of the Year, Best Group Video and Best Rock Video for ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, while the promo also took the awards for Best Direction, Best Cinematography (both Samuel Bayer) and Best Editing (Tom Royes).

“It’s nice to know rock music still has a place at MTV,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said while accepting the Best Rock Video award.

Bleh, so irrelevant. But the Green Day album is very good, so I suppose I can agree. Full story.

Hoax text forces ManMatters helpline to close

danger @ 12:29 pm

Did you all get the text?

The message claimed the mobile phone provider 3 were giving away 1,000 free phones to test their new network and added: “I got one a few minutes ago.”

Those who rang the number got through to ManMatters, a helpline for impotent men. The Examiner is reporting today that the helpline has had to shut down after being bombarded with calls caused by the text. Viral power of the worst kind. Full story.

Experimental mice able to regrow organs

danger @ 12:24 pm
SCIENTISTS have created “miracle mice” that can regenerate amputated limbs or damaged vital organs, making them able to recover from injuries that would kill or permanently disable normal animals.

The experimental animals are unique among mammals in their ability to regrow their heart, toes, joints and tail.

Definately a holy mother of god and a few policemen combined kind of news story. Full story.
